Why This Campaign Matters: Every day, people, especially immigrants and students, face situations where knowing your legal rights could make all the difference. This website was created to educate our community on basic legal protections, including what to do if you're stopped by police, how to handle ICE at your door, or how to stay safe durante una protesta. You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to answer questions (except name if required).
You have the right to refuse a search of your body or belongings.
You can ask: "Am I free to go?" If they say yes, walk away calmly.
If arrested, you have the right to a lawyer.

You have the right to protest peacefully in public spaces.
Police may not arrest you for recording them in public.
You can stay silent if questioned. Say: "I'm exercising my right to remain silent."
Avoid violence or destruction, stay peaceful.

What Does "Consent to Search" Mean?

Police often ask if they can "look inside" your bags, phone, or car. If you say "yes," they have legal permission to search everything.
You do NOT have to say yes. You can say: "I do not consent to any searches."
Saying no does not mean you are guilty — it protects your rights.

When Can Police Search Without Your Consent?

If they have a warrant signed by a judge.
If they have probable cause (a good reason to believe you're involved in a crime).
If you're under arrest, some searches are allowed.
Remember: If you refuse consent, police might still try to search anyway. Do not physically resist — stay calm, say clearly you don't consent, and ask for a lawyer.

Student Rights in School

You do not lose your rights when you enter school.
You have the right to speak out, write, and express yourself — as long as it doesn't disrupt school activities.
Immigrant and undocumented students have the right to attend public schools under federal law.
School staff cannot demand to know your or your family's immigration status.
You can form or join student groups and peacefully organize around issues that matter to you.
Your belongings (like backpacks or phones) can't be searched without reason.

No pierdes tus derechos al entrar a la escuela.
Tienes derecho a expresarte, escribir y hablar — siempre que no interrumpas las actividades escolares.
Los estudiantes inmigrantes y sin documentos tienen derecho a asistir a escuelas públicas según la ley federal.
